A great idea for notes, from James Joyce

Stickie note, by Terry Freedman

It’s rather unfortunate that photography is not allowed at the British Library exhibition about writing (Writing: Making your mark). I’d have loved to have taken a photo of the page from James Joyce’s Ulysses. It shows the author’s notes going in all different directions (which I do myself, especially when running out of space on the page). However, there’s a twist: the notes were colour-coded according to their intended final destination in the book.

It made me think that perhaps a useful companion to my article 10 note-taking apps for writers would be one entitled something along the lines of X interesting ways of making notes. I’ve written articles about making notes before, but mentioning apps or programs, and which are therefore now out of date.

I’ll put my thinking cap on.
